Profile

Patricia Cole’s work explores dislocation, loss and reconciliation.  Cole continually establishes creative identity through exploration of personal history and issues of peace and justice.  Cole was born in war-damaged Northern Ireland at the end of World War II.  Political activism led to elective office. Cole has practiced art in Indiana, Aix en Provence, France, Baltimore Maryland, Amsterdam, NL and South Afrika.

Co-founder Alliance of Visual Artists, coalition of artists coordinated the premier Fall Opening, gallery tours.  Secured Department of Commerce funding to produce Guide to Galleries.  (1996)

Proposed and spearheaded passage of Indiana’s only Percent for Public Art ordinance requiring city capital projects to designate funds for design and installation of Public Art.  (1994) 

As member of Bloomington Area Arts Council Board of Directors, worked to ensure development and effectiveness of six-county community arts council and facility, raising $1 million for funding of Waldron Arts Center.  (1986 to 1993)

Awarded commendation from Bloomington Restorations, Inc. outstanding contribution of a public official. (1996, 2003)

Proposed, wrote, and negotiated $290,000 Comprehensive Employment and Training Act grant to convert vacant Carnegie library into county historical museum, The Old Library.  (1979)

Elected member nine-person Bloomington City Council governing City. (1991 to 2003) President 2001
